Shinigami; The Deathbringer Race
Massive block of text incoming. Read at your own pace, otherwise your brain might implode.
- Spoiler:
- Racial Name: Shinigami
Nick Names: Mud-born, for ones left in mud, Middle-class, for ones left on soft earth, and Rocky Ones, for ones left on a rock. See Relationships. These nicknames are almost never used by ones who were left in the mud, and only sometimes by ones left on soft earth. Again, see Relationships.
Genders?: There are two genders, male and female, but there are little to no physical differences between them. Female are generally thought of as weaker by the upper crust.
Average Life span: Basically, Shinigami are immortal in the sense that they can only be killed by either another Shinigami. Or, a member of another race who wishes them dead with all of their heart. This way, they would just need to be delt a killing blow like that would kill a human. Or, they could be killed by rotten circumstances, being ground into dust by something like a boulder falling on them. Otherwise they'll just pick themselves up and continue on, seldom traumatized emotionally.
General Appearance: Shinigami are composed of a hard, black substance that is presumably a volcanic rock like that of obsidian. They have veins of a clearer substance flowing through it, but it isn't liquid, just lines of something like glass that grants flow of their mental energy through their body, allowing movement as though the stone was flesh. Yeah, magic-NO-SCIENCE DUH. Thus, when one dies, rigor mortis is nearly instantaneous. They have bright red eyes that absorb light to be expelled in the darkness for night vision, and are never born with hair, but often wear hats to make up for it. They have no toes, but two thumbs. Their feet are like our feet would be if we had really tight socks glued to them permanently; You could move your toes and balance yourself just as well, but not move the toes apart. Their hands look like ours, but more symmetrical- basically, another thumb on the other side of the hand, and no fingernails. Their body is smooth, seamless, and streamlined, nothing out of place. Though, they do have lines etched in their skin like veins, but without veins. They grow by basically taking whatever raw material they touch first on their birthday. Some exploit it to make them look pretty, with gold, or more sturdy, with something like titanium. The taken material is then spread throughout their body like a second coating, thicker in some places to imitate growth. In general, they have slightly longer arms than humans.
A Shinigami always has one green gem, about the size of a shooter marble, in the middle of their body. This is their heart. Another gem, blue, in their skull. This is their brain. Another two smaller ones, both yellow, in their hands. Two more, then, in their feet; both orange. The colors of the gems are deeply rooted in their culture. See, if your hands and head are working together, yellow and blue, your heart is easy and will soon follow, green. And if you see with your eyes what your hands are doing is right, red and yellow, you can be sure your feet are right with them-orange.
Shinigami can also add things onto themselves by expending some of the energy in their gems. This is like giving blood, except the dizziness you sometimes feel is mandatory, and lasts for a lot longer. The things they could add on are simple, like claws or spikes on their back. They'd just punch a lump of rock, dispel some energy, and voila! A claw on your hand, now part of it!

Common Personality: Shinigami are a subject which is, in short, not at all pleasant. They are most often antisocial, and near-always at least slightly pessimistic, as a rudimentary definition of personality. The way they reproduce, as well, is thoroughly engrained into their mindset.
See, they do not reproduce. To explain this, I must first explain their existence. Which I hav, In the Society section. Please read that before is section.
So, now I can tell you how they don't reproduce! Except, I can't. See the relationships section.
Now that we have all that down...
Shinigami are oftentimes pessimistic, antisocial, narcissistic, self-loathing, masochistic, sadistic, barbaric, or any other mental/emotional anomaly that is generally negative. Every Shinigami is afflicted with one of the seven deadly sins, to an extent; It's written into their hearts and brains. See the Relationships section.
Shinigami, though, are not always like this. They can be nice, kind, or charming. It's just sort of abnormal, and seen as weak. Their culture values strength in mind and will, so 'weaker' things like kindness are sneered at by the better-bred. See the Relationships section.
Society: First, I must say this: Each Shinigami is basically just six gems. These gems are encased in a body of stone, and the gems, together, represent one conscience. Technically, to live a Shinigami only needs the blue one, their brain. But they would be heartless and a cripple. If all of one gem type is lost, their function is lost forever. If, say, one hand was destroyed, you could still move both arms. But only half as well as before. With none, those arms just go limp. Same for their feet and legs. Also, if one is without their blue gem, brain, but still has the green one, heart, they can continue to exist. They just have a really, very bad memory and are prone, if not entirely inclined to, mental instability.
Now the confusing part - Shinigami Heart and Brain fusion, though not to be confused with reproduction. This is a technique that is, in it's essence, the only reason a lot Shinigami continue living. Think of their entire existence as a huge game of Big Fish. One Shinigami kills another, and thus takes ether their heart, hands, feet or brain's power. Or more than one part, or maybe just one hand or foot. When a gem's power is stolen, it becomes clear and brittle. Gems that are not absorbed just fade over time, taking about a week before being empty entirely.
Now, the dangerous part. When one Shinigami takes another's heart or brain, they also take that shinigami's will or thoughts, respectively. The will and/or thoughts go into their own. And are supposedly assimilated into their own. But, if one's own mind or heart is not great enough - the greater of the two - the stolen one will take over theirs. So, let's say Shin 1, a weak little bloke, kills Shin 2, a big experienced murderer through trickery, and takes his heart and brain. Shin 1 is soon taken over from within by Shin 2's thoughts and heart, and in effect becomes Shin 2 In a different body.
But if Shin 1 had a greater brain then Shin 2, and only his heart was taken over? He is still himself, but with Shin 2's emotions, motives, and willpower. The other way around? He is now Shin 2, with Shin 1's emotions, motives, and willpower. Simple, correct?
To clarify, you gain part of one's athletic ability from their feet, and skill with hands from their hands.
And, taking all this into account, here's basically the way their society works (please see the Relationships/Reproduction section before continuing, otherwise this may not make sense.)
The Shinigami are not exactly a warlike race, as there are no factions to wage war with among themselves. If a war was to break out, it would be between two Godhead Shinigami.
A Godhead Shinigami is a Shinigami that has accumulated so many other Shinigami's gems that their energy leaks out from them like sloppy tendrils of rainbow-colored power. The tendrils are basically asthetic, so blah blah blah. Nothing there. But what they can do with the energy they're made of is much cooler. Basically, they can add more things onto their body. Big things. And they have an overwhelming Gene that makes the first thing they add wings. Big, long, black wings generally, looking like they're feathered. But a Shinigami's personality may make them more prone to leathery wings, or smaller ones, or maybe even, if they're enough of a Deviant of the Genes, something like spider legs sprouting from their back, or thrusters that run on the near-infinite gem energy they now have. It matters, and a Godhead Shinigami's wings are very special to them, more precious than almost their life, and definitely the lives of others. This isn't a gene, though. It's just the way most Shinigami think about it.
Along with wings, they could make themselves taller, more bulky, or even condense the matter in their own body to make themselves smaller. They could also add wicked claws, laser canon arms that shoot raw gem power, or change their hand into a sword. For the latter of those, that would change all their expertise in that hand to swordplay skill. One may also see how that would affect their strife Speccibus; If they originally wielded a crossbow, now it would be Crossbow+Swordhandkind, or possibly Crossbow+Fistkind. After turning Godhead, a Shinigami will probably leave the planet, in search of another to conquer. Godheads are basically the people all rock born look up to, and sometimes check in on the planet to make sure it hasn't imploded.
A picture: https://i.imgur.com/ualewOs.jpg
All the Shinigami live scattered across the globe, never in colonies, more like, 'Your crater is sort of near mine. Go away or I'll kill you.' There is basically no government besides the thread of incineration by the Godhead Shinigami who still live on the planet, as a circle of elders of sorts.
Home Planet: 'Our Planet' is what they call it, or sometimes 'My Planet', from more conceited ones. It is large, dark, and craggy, with rocky outcropping a and deep ravines. As the Shinigami only ever need to drink, it has a few streams throughout it. They have thirteen moons, which they never bothered naming, and one sun. Their houses are basically square craters that pit the surface of the planet, with a roof built on top of it using slabs of rock, done by the Gaurdian. One born in the mud, though, will probably live in a treehouse, if they can find a tree.
Relationships/Reproduction: OK, the relationships and reproduction of this race are basically the same concept, seeing as almost none of this race can hold off from killing another for very long; see Dominant Love. Thus, I've fused the two categories. This part is probably hard to think of as decidedly 'loving' in any human way, but it makes sense to them. Couples are not necessarily a male and female. Also, there is no kind of concept for rivalry, because nobody ever has rivals for very long, seeing as one will kill the other pretty soon.
In essence, types of love:
Couple Affection; When two Shinigami get together, and don't kill each other. They love each other, obviously, because they aren't killing each other. To create a new Shinigami, they both pluck parts of their own gem's power, and put it into a few rocks, which turns into gems. They put the gems into another rock, or a lump of clay, and that becomes the new baby, the lump of whatever being changed into a normal body by the gem's power. The child has a mix of the parent's personalities, sort of. Usually just like, 'Your mother's patience and your father's sharp tongue. You probably got the knack for dismantling things from your father's components that he never used but got from his father.' They care for the baby until they are afraid of it, which, in all honesty, can be pretty quick. They leave it on a patch of soft earth usually, see Gaurdians.
Fused Rebirth; When two Shinigami get together, and they fuse all of their gems together. The resulting creature breaks it's gems into multiple children's gems, ands urns those into children. The creature disintegrates, having dispelled too much energy, and the children are left in the mud unless the rebirth took place on a rock or patch of soft earth. See Gaurdians.
Dominant Love: Like Fused Rebirth, but this way one lover kills he other lover, and consumes their heart and mind. The heart and minds of both battle each other, and every time the victors will be from the same lover. The dominant lover takes all the remaining gems, and parts of their own gems, and makes a child using whatever is available. They will then usually leave is on a rock when they feel it good, but sometimes on soft earth. See Gaurdians.
Now, when to potential lovers meet, they sometimes discuss what kind of love they'll have in the end, if it's Fused Rebirth or Couple Affection. If it's Dominant Love that's usually pretty sudden, but almost always the two have had eyes for each other; it's written in their genes.
Genes are something complex, and it isn't the same as a Component, something you may have in you that you inherited from a parent. Genes are the in-written code of Shinigami that makes everything work without very many living adults. Basically, instinct, or a component that can never be overwritten. Sometimes a Shinigami will be a Deviant of the Genes, and they aren't pulled as much as others by the gene's power. This is usually when their parents had ridiculously contrasting personalities, and their own personality is spread out very wide. There are... A lot of genes, but not many are important. Uh, yeah, gems work by [magic]-no-wait-[science]-er-no-uhm-
When a baby is created, they are made of something. This something basically is what their body shape is hinged on. If it's made of a block of lead, the kid'll grow up sturdy and thickset. If it's a block of wood, they'll be tall and not very sturdy, but probably smarter. And obviously, this leads us to Gaurdians.
Guardians: Gaurdians are creatures that are made of residual energy from a child's gems. See, a parent will always put way too much power in the gems, and that power is held there until their parents leave them. Then they are deposited on one of three things, which changes what their gaurdian is. From order of highest-bred to lowest:
Left on Rock: If a child is left on rock, the child will fall into a coma for about a month, because a huge surge of energy leaves their body, into the stone. Their Gaurdian is going to be big, burly and strong, made like a giant stone golem. They are probably not very bright, but can take care of a kid, right? And the child is probably going to grow up larger than average, no mater what they were first composed of.
Left on the Soft Earth: If a child is left on soft earth, this means the parent cared for them. They will probably grow up pretty average height and weight, but won't get their gaurdian for a week after they are placed down. The energy goes into the ground, but the child stays awake, just sitting there for a week. Then the gaurdian emerges from the earth. It will be composed of something like wood, and is probably tall and fast-moving. They'll probably have a bad temper, but are talented at taking care of their child.
Left in the Mud: This represents lack of care for the child. Their excess energy leaks into the mud, and a mud creature comes out. They can be any size, shape, or form, with any level of skill or intellect. The lack of care a parent has is made up for by the excellent gaurdian. The child will probably be stunted, but smart. Frowned upon by most rock-bred Shinigami.
Symbol Rules None. A symbol should probably represent they character's personality, though.
Racial powers: Shinigami sometimes are born with a special power, but usually only if they were left in the mud. The powers are either A) Strength/speed B) Telekinesis, or C) Psychokinesis. It is generally just one power, but could be a mixture of two. Telekinesis would be moving objects with one's mind, psychokinesis would be manipulating force or a form of energy with one's mind. So, make something move faster, or make the fire bigger/hotter/made of ice.
Attributes: Shinigami are, yes, made of stone. But the mental energy that allows them to move makes the stone softer and mor manipulatable, so it's basically just twice the strength of human flesh. So, a Guilotine could get them dead, but a claymore to the neck may not chop off their head, especially for rock born ones. They almost all look the same, besides add-ons they've given themselves. So they're pretty equal in that regard. They have a mouth, of course, but only water needs to go in there, which goes straight up to the brain, and down to the heart. The gems convert the water into energy, and that is distributed to the other four gems. So, they don't need meat or anything.
Traits: Since they only ever need water, they have really weird teeth sometimes, depending on their birth. Ones left in the mud have sharp teeth, not unlike Trolls. Ones left on the soft earth have long, needle like teeth that slide into grooves on the opposite jaw when the mouth is closed. When they grin it sorta looks like jail bars. Ones left on a rock have basically all human molars. All teeth are a transparent white and never fall out, being rooted all the way into their veins. Their eyes are red gems, shaped like human eyes. But to imply an emotion, they are actually a large disk of the stuff inside their skull, so the eye hole can enlarge and reshape itself for a glare or a smile. Their skull shape varies by birth, mud and soft earth having more human-like skulls, and rock born having more cinderblock shaped heads.
IM system: Shinigami use the IM system Deathstare. It's basically Pesterchum, and says '___ began staring down ____', as it is polite for Shinigami to stare each other in the eye before speaking, for around three seconds. Otherwise, it's rude, and even ones born in the mud take offense.
Typing rules: None. Quirks are common, but not all Shinigami use them. Quirks could be anything, really.
Other: Shinigami always have a seven letter first name, three letter middle name, and a five letter last name. Oftentimes symbols are used to replace letters in their last or middle name. Middle names often don't make sense phonetically, don't worry.
